German universities of Applied Sciences were set up 50 years ago with a hands-on approach to academic knowledge. The focus is less on theory driven exploration and more on practical application of knowledge. Therefore, a great many of the academic staff has extensive work experience in industry – and are able to transfer first-hand knowledge of subjects such as business, engineering, media or social work to their students.

University of Applied Sciences grant fully recognized Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and increasingly open pathways to PhD projects inside and outside their institutions. Many of their graduates work in executive functions in highly innovative small and medium sized industries in the area, often world champions in their field.
